[livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse #200: "Visions of Johanna" lyrics

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it

During "Shuttlepod One"

"Did you hear that?"

"What?"

"I thought I heard something from the comm."

"Go back to sleep."

"I wasn't asleep to begin with."

Malcolm sat up. "Is this because I kept you up with my letters?"

"Naw, I swear I thought I just heard something."

He half laughed and half scoffed. "You think one of us should man the helm, just in case?"

Trip glanced across the pod at him incredulously. "'Just in case'? That a hint of optimism in Mr. Cynic himself?" But he gazed back toward the front of the pod. "...That might not be a bad idea."

"Just in case?"

"Just in case."

"Who wants to go first?"

Trip hopped to his feet (and nearly banged his head on the ceiling). "I'll do it. We can go in shifts."

Which only lasted for about three minutes before Malcolm found himself standing just behind the chair, looking over Trip's shoulder.

"Trouble sleeping?"

"Two pairs of eyes are better than one."

"For...what? There ain't much to look for."

"Is my cynicism rubbing off on you, Commander?"

"No," was Trip's quick response. "No, it's not. Besides," he added, "if I fall asleep at the wheel, you can keep a lookout."

"I should hope you're a better pilot than that."

"It's been a long day, what can I say." They shared a look. "And...someone's bound to come across us. Right?"

Malcolm was slow to agree, but he did manage a nod and a quiet "of course".

Dreams were nice to escape from the reality of it all, but it was hard to get back to them when the knowledge that they were going to die, sooner rather than later, and the chances of ever being found in time were slim. Very slim. Too slim for Malcolm. But he wanted to try Trip's optimism. At least then he could imagine he might have something to look forward to. Plus, he wasn't up for arguing again about the futility of it all with his superior--his friend. Trip had eternal hope, and that was one of many things the realist envied about the man.
