History
TV canon history is here in all of its Trek wiki glory. As for book canon, I'll just leave these here. The better/quicker/smaller yet more complete version of his history can be found here where the Memory Beta links fail.

  • Born in 9:3 Dragon in a town in the Bannorn. His father's a proud member of the military, and the Reeds are a family of some mild renown with the family name not unfamiliar in the military ranks as well as the Templar Order

  • Raised training to fight in order to follow in his family's footsteps until he gets recruited as a young Templar trainee

  • Stood up to some Templar recruit bullies, got his ass held down in a lake for his troubles, leading to a deathly fear of drowning

  • A Seeker looking for potential recruits picks Malcolm for his focus, his fighting skills, and his exemplary record of not putting up with anyone's power-abusing shit

  • (His father was not happy.)

  • Trained as a Seeker in Orlais under the watchful eye of the same mentor that recruited him--who turned out to be very very morally grey and a low-key player of the Grand Game

  • Mentor gets caught and gets his ass exiled. Malcolm is placed under a much kinder but more traditionally black and white mentor

  • Among (many) incidents while serving the Seekers: getting trapped on a sail-less, paddle-less boat while pursuing an extremely slippery maleficar with another man, bitching and bickering, they are become friends once another ship passes by to rescue them; assisted in dismantling a small rogue faction of Templars who were trying to egg on a war by making it seem like there were attacks by mages; while following some rumors, part of a building collapsed on him, and his mentor determinedly got him out, stone by stone, rather than leave him to die of his wounds

  • Attempted to help Ferelden in the Blight with a Templar (despite it being in neither of their purviews) who went from distrust, fighting, and bickering to a good relationship. The Templar was slain, and Malcolm rarely speaks of him

  • After things settled from the Blight, he finally got a letter from his sister (and decidedly not his parents) that their town had been attacked and they'd moved to the Free Marches

  • Gifted a hunting dog pup from mentor's litter

  • Tried to keep Templars and mages in line following the destruction of the Kirkwall Chantry. Tried to do the same after White Spire. Guess how that turned out?

  • When Lambert ordered the Nevarran Accord null and void, he stayed loyal to the Chantry

  • Was present for the annulment of the Dairsmuid circle. Has nightmares

  • Joined the search for the Hero and the Champion, traveling far and wide

  • Failing in that, when he learned of the failure of the Conclave, the death of the Divine, and the restoration of the Inquisition, he hightailed it in the direction of Skyhold

  • Personality

Malcolm tries to emulate everything he thinks exemplifies a soldier: piety, honesty, loyalty and devotion, respect, politeness, duty. These are traits instilled in him since he was a boy old enough to understand language. Being in the Seekers has only hardened these traits.

He is a true believer in speaking softly and carrying a large--well, he tends not to carry large swords, but actions will always speak loudest. He is polite, almost painfully so, unless he thinks ill of someone. Then his polite tones turn scathing. He has, it seems, picked up some moves from Orlais after all. He thinks himself witty and charming, and to some degree is, though not disarmingly so. His gentle nature does not mask his stern, serious steel, especially while on duty (and when isn't he on duty).

While he does have a sense of humour, despite appearances, it is a dry gallows humour he sports. His anger is much like an assassin's dagger: he's extremely difficult to rile up, but he will hurt with a small sharp barb inserted right where it will do the most damage, without making a fuss. While he tries to seem otherwise, he's prideful, and it sometimes gets the better of him in his looks and his skills, and sometimes finds himself jealous of those with greater accolades then himself.

What seems to stand out most is his deeply rooted pessimism, though if you ask him he would call it realism. He is instead pragmatic and practical, but he does enjoy his personal moments of victory whenever he can nab them. What is more difficult to see is that past the pessimism is, in fact, hope. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. In this way, he tries to minimize the emotional toll on himself, given how terrible he is at dealing with his own emotions and mental state. He also walks a fine line between doing his job and putting himself in unnecessary danger. It's usually just stubbornness, selflessness, and duty that makes him push himself. He is by the book, but will choose diplomacy over a fight, every time, if he can.

Learning to relax around others and make friends is no easy feat, though he mellows and becomes much more personable around anyone bothersome enough to make nice with him. He can even be a mild troublemaker or flirt around the right people. Instead, he treats most situations with a healthy (or unhealthy) dose of paranoia, looking for the trap, the angle, the ways out. Always better to be prepared. But unlike many Templars and some Seekers, he's learned to see the grey between the black and the white. It gives him a perspective many refuse to see. No matter how he'll put orders ahead of all else, he refuses to compromise his sense of morality.

    Strengths & Weaknesses

    Strengths
Seeker abilities (p good defenses against magic, lack of possession, no need for lyrium kthnx, etc), understanding of the Templar Order and Circle of Magi, close ties to the Chantry (or had) and Seekers still loyal to it, fighting (limited training with many weapons, proficient in short bows, short swords, hand to hand, lesser proficiency in shields and daggers), tactics, giving orders, following orders, squinting at things he's suspicious of or doesn't like

    Weaknesses
Two-handed swords, compromising when he thinks he's right, probably makes Templars and maybe mages a little antsy and testy, what is optimism, dealing with emotions and the expressing thereof, lying, self-sacrifice!!!, water/swimming in water/water that's waist deep or higher

    Inventory

Seeker armor, a couple weapons (short sword, Seeker shield, shortbow, arrows), the horse he rode in on, a dog that is not a mabari

    Motivation

After Lord Seekers Lambert and Lucius have gone around screwing things up with Seekers and throwing tantrums in the form of 'screw everything we're gonna do our own thing', he seeks out the Inquisition and Cassandra, believing this to be the true way to peace and the will of the late Divine.
